Field Note / Inclusive performance
Performance Budgets for Immersive Websites
A performance budget is a set of limits agreed before production: how much media, JavaScript, font data, and motion the experience can afford while still meeting real-user speed and responsiveness targets.
- 01Budget before visual production begins.
- 02Measure field performance, not only a fast developer machine.
- 03Motion must not monopolize the main thread or destabilize layout.

01 / Core experience
Use thresholds as guardrails, not the entire strategy.
Core Web Vitals measure three important parts of real-world experience. At the 75th percentile of visits, current “good” thresholds are:
Passing these thresholds does not guarantee a persuasive website, but failing them can undermine trust before the experience has a chance to communicate. Set internal budgets tighter than the public thresholds so normal variation does not push the site into a poor range.
02 / Visual production
Large imagery needs disciplined delivery.
Immersive design often depends on image and video quality, so indiscriminate compression is not the answer. The solution is to reserve visual weight for the moments that need it.
- Use responsive image sources and modern formats.
- Declare stable dimensions to prevent layout shift.
- Prioritize the first meaningful image and lazy-load later media.
- Use poster frames and user intent before loading large video.
- Avoid several off-screen iframes competing during initial load.
Spend bytes where the visitor can see and value them now.
03 / Runtime performance
Smoothness is an architecture decision.
Long tasks, oversized libraries, and scroll handlers that run on every frame can make a visually polished site feel heavy. Prefer CSS transforms and opacity for transitions. Use observers instead of constant position checks. Load only the interaction code required for the current system.
Lab tests are useful for repeatable diagnostics, but Interaction to Next Paint needs real interaction and is fundamentally a field metric. Combine Lighthouse or local profiling with real-user monitoring, Search Console, and device testing.
Performance review questions
- What loads before the first useful moment?
- Can later chapters wait?
- Does the interface respond during transitions?
- What happens on a mid-range phone and constrained connection?
- Does reduced motion also reduce runtime work?
Quick reference
Questions, answers, and next reading.
What are the good Core Web Vitals thresholds?
At the 75th percentile, the current good thresholds are LCP at or below 2.5 seconds, INP at or below 200 milliseconds, and CLS at or below 0.1.
Do animations always hurt performance?
No. Small, composited transform and opacity animations can be efficient. Problems come from excessive JavaScript, layout-triggering properties, large media, and too many effects running together.
Should video autoplay in an immersive hero?
Only when it provides clear value, is muted where required, has an appropriate poster and control strategy, and does not compromise loading, data use, motion preferences, or readability.
